Fantastical Fake Sushi

Today has just blown by!! Here is what the day has looked like so far.

-worked off my Miya’s food baby at spin this morning
-work was insane and now I am blinded by excel spreadsheets!
-squeezed in my abs workout
-physical therapy took 2 hours tonight
-in the process of baking a cake for a friend’s 30th tomorrow
-my hair dye is processing while I’m writing this blog
-it’s 8:53pm
-need to pick Jeremy up at 10pm from Curling

When will the hurried rush of today end??? Probably about 10:30pm. A whole hour an a half past my bed time. Yes…I go to bed at 9am every night (I have the knees and sleep pattern of an 80 yr old).

So yesterday I let you know that it was restaurant week in New Haven and we had reservations at Miya’s with our friends Karina & Emrys.

Jeremy and I had been to Miya’s once before and we weren’t fans. Why you ask? Well…we lurve our sushi and when we moved to Connecticut we were on the quest to find the BEST sushi place that could become OUR sushi place. We were on the hunt for an east coast Zen 5. Zen 5 was only the most awesome sushi place in San Diego. Their sushi was fantastic and the fact that they played reggae music made it our all-time #1 sushi joint (pun intended) of choice.

We told everyone we met in Connecticut about our our pursuit to find the perfect sushi restaurant. Of course, we were told to go to Miya’s. When we went to Miya’s we were expecting fabulous sushi because everyone recommended it and gave it rave reviews. Upon our first glance at the menu, we knew we were in trouble. They didn’t have regular sake!! They didn’t have any of your typical rolls!!! What kind of mess had we gotten ourselves in to?

Needless to say, we never went back to Miya’s. Now, a year and a half later, we finally went back. What coursed us to do so…restaurant week! We figured a fixed price menu sampling would be a great way to give Miya’s a second chance. We already knew what to expect (non-traditional sushi) and were ready to give it a shot one more time.

I have to say…I am  SO glad that we went back. You know it must have been good if I had to work off a food baby this morning!

Let me just say, one of the most fabulous things about Miya’s is their menu’s. The menu’s are ridiculously hilarious. Not only are the names of the items funny, they all have very witty descriptions. I wish I had a pen so I could have written some of them down.  Just take a look at what we ordered as sake. I had one called cherokee sumac love potion, while Karina chose the emerald witches’ lips sake. Mine was a sweet tasting concoction, while Karina’s had a natural, citrus taste and was infused with wild pinecones. Sake it to me!!

The first course was an impressive pumpkin miso soup and a garden salad.

Next up was sashimi…I love sashimi like a fat kid loves cake. Yeah…I like it alot and this was some darn good sashimi.

Then came the barrage of sushi rolls. Our table was packed with food. I wish they had put little flags on each of the plates so you could remember what was what. I also wish they hadn’t brought them all out at one time. I am a big fan of food pacing at restaurants. I know for sure one of our rolls was the foo man choo roll which was a roll of broccoli, roasted garlic, and black beans.

One of these is the hot-headed cowgirl roll; “a coconut-covered roll of avocado, cream cheese, papaya, burdock & hot pepper. Inspired by all strong women who like to ride bulls”.

I also know that we had the chinese pygmy rodeo roll which was “seasoned potato skin stuffed with cauliflower & scallions, topped with melted danish havarti cheese, & drizzled with lemon dill aioli”. It tasted just liked a bake potato.

Last, but (of course) not least was dessert. On our prix fixed menu the dessert of the night was…drumroll please….seven deadly sushi! “A sinfully delicious roll of banana, peanut butter, strawberries & chocolate – deep fried & topped with baby scoops of hand- churned rose petal ice cream.” Here is a picture of Jeremy trying to get the whole thing in his mouth.

My close up picture of this little delight did not turn out good at all. The lighting was dark and I really need a better camera.

All of the rolls are really good. I don’t consider them sushi, but they are tasty and original rolls and I would go back for more. They are fatastical fake sushi rolls!

Whoo! I finished this just in time to go pick up the professor. I still need to frost the cake!!! It’s 9:43pm. Nighty night blog land.
