Eating Alone
I typically hate eating alone in a restaurant but I hate room “service” even more. You know when they show up with average food in the average time of 30 minutes with the average 18% tip already on the bill and then expect a tip on top of that! So I’ve been wondering: how does someone who hates eating alone manage eating alone in a restaurant?
Years back, after weeks on the road in Canada, I was eating alone in Saskatchewn–I know, I was probably the only person in the province at the time–and I noticed a lady also eating alone. I was so desperate for company that I almost asked her if she wanted to have dinner together. I didn’t. Being devilishly handsome gives women the wrong idea; being madly in love with my wife keeps me walking the line.
So, here are some iRoadwarrior tips to surviving eating alone:
1. Take a book (or better, a Kindle); at the least it sparks conversation
2. Use your iPhone–email, blogs (like this one), Twitter, etc. make you feel slightly connected to people
3. Sit and eat at the bar–you can always talk to someone if you want (the bartender, the drunk, or the loser next to you)
4. Use your notepad to think through your day
5. Do not talk loudly on your phone–someone will glare at you and it may be me
In the end it sucks but making things that suck turn into things that don’t suck is part of the iRoadwarrior’s magic.
What do you do?
